DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR SLASHING AND SPREADING A PATTERN
FOR FLAT PATTERN MANIPULATION

The accompanying drawings demonstrate creating a princess line seam using 1SEXBOD basic draft.  They use all the commands you will need to do any style of flat pattern design and an serve as example of how to use the commands for flat pattern design, .

1. DRAFTING LINES

The first thing you need to do, when beginning the flat pattern process, is to clear the Drafting Lines out of the drawing so they do not linger to confuse the drawing.  AutoCAD functions with a phenomenon called LAYERs.  CPM  has the ability to draw lines on different "LAYERS";  that is, it thinks of the lines as though they are drawn on overlapping layers of clear plastic or acetate.
LAYER is a command in its own right.  Pop-down the MODIFY menu and SELECT the Control Layers function. The Layers and Line Types pop-up menu window will open. Through this window you can control the layer functions.

1.1.    C.P.M. draws the pattern blocks with blue drafting lines and yellow dimension lines.  The basic block drafting commands are written to make the computer see these lines as being on a different LAYERs than the pattern seam lines (much like 3 layers of acetate sheets with the pattern lines drawn on one and the drafting lines on 2 others).   The blue drafting lines are on a layer named CONSTRUCTION, the yellow dimension lines are on a layer named LABEL and the patterns blocks draw on a layer named PATTERN.  When you draw and enter SYMBOLS, you are working in LAYER "0" (ZERO).   In the Sew1 drawing,  the drawing label "Sew1.dwg & 36"X 48"" is on a layer named TEXT.  Most of the time, this information is interesting, but not important to your work.  There have been times, however, when students have managed to create a situation where some ordinary editing function, such as EXTEND, will not perform properly.  This is usually because they have managed some how to get part of their drawing lines transferred to a different layer than the rest of the pattern pieces.

1.2.  TURN DRAFTING AND DIMENSION LINES OFF OR ON

1.2.1.  To turn the Drafting Lines OFF (or ON) SELECT OPTIONS pop-down menu,  then Drafting Lines  and then from the fly-out menu, DRAFT OFF (or DRAFT ON).

1.2.2.  To DELETE  the blue and yellow lines Drafting Lines, SELECT DRAFT DELETE from the fly-out menu.  You will see a lot of screen flickering and at the end you will see that all that is left on the screen is the pattern outline, Cyan Margin and the Black Drawing Page Border.  SELECTING DRFT-OFF makes them disappear from the screen.  The computer still sees the lines in its memory.

1.2.3.  You may need to use the drafting lines as reference points for slashing or pivoting, mark the patterns with SMLDOTs  at those key points.  Once you have marked the important points on the pattern, you will probably want to turn these lines
